Company Overview

Established in 1933 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., CropLife America is the nation’s largest trade organization for agriculture and pest management. We represent more than 80 developers, manufacturers, formulators and distributors of virtually all the crop protection products used by American farmers and growers. We are the voice of the industry that ensures the safe and responsible use of pesticides in order to provide a safe, affordable and abundant food supply.

CropLife America is governed by a regionally representative Board of Directors. Our staff is comprised of experienced lobbyists, lawyers, science, regulatory and communications experts. More than 30 CropLife staff members carry out policies and programs on behalf of members and industry.

Company History

1910: The Insecticide Act of 1910 is passed.

1933: The Agricultural Insecticide and Fungicide Association (AIFA) is formed with 14 original member companies.

1940s: Use of synthetic pesticide products rises in the United States as American agriculture revolutionizes as a result of World War II.

1947: The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) is passed; The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) becomes the registrar for pesticide products; An extensive pesticide labeling system is created to ensure safe and correct product use.

1949: AIFA changes its name to the National Agricultural Chemicals Association (NACA) and moves its headquarters to Washington, D.C.; NACA extends its membership to pesticide formulators, remixers and suppliers of diluents, clays and surfactants.

1964: Pesticide safety and environmental health standards increase as the Secretary of Agriculture gains the power to refuse pesticide registrations or ban products under an amendment to FIFRA.

1967: NACA and eight European national agricultural chemical associations form the International Group of National Associations of Agrochemical Manufacturers (GIFAP), headquartered in Brussels, Belgium.

1970: FIFRA jurisdiction is given to the newly created U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

1994: NACA moves to its current offices in Washington, D.C. and NACA becomes the American Crop Protection Association (ACPA).

1996: The Food Quality and Protection Act (FQPA) is passed.

2001: GIFAP, now called the Global Crop Protection Federation, becomes CropLife International.

2002: CropLife America is adopted as the new name for the ACPA, reflecting the changing nature of the pesticide industry as not just chemical crop protection, but plant science technology.

2003: CropLife America partners with environmental groups and industry allies to help pass The Pesticide Registration Improvement Act (PRIA), legislation that improves the pesticide registration process with the EPA and provides funding for worker safety and conservation programs.

TODAY: CropLife America is dedicated to supporting responsible stewardship of our products to promote the health and well-being of people and the environment; and to promote increasingly responsible, science-driven legislation and regulation.
